great series, sad ending
One of my favourite yaoi series. This was one of my first yaoi's I ever watched. First time watching it I was a bit confused as to what was happening in it. I remember asking my girlfriend at the end what happened. We ended up watching it again I finally realized what was happening. It's a dark series though it's not so hardcore like some yaois that are floating around. Very interesting in the setting that was made for it, futuristic in many senses but so far back in other ways. Loved that Rikki had finally started to fall in love with Iason which made the end that much more tragic. If you like the slave-master type of relationship this is definitely a must watch for you. It's also nice if you enjoy a more realistic love, where the main character doesn't automatically fall in love with the secondary character within in instant. I find I always like series like that much more, perhaps because it's easier to relate to in some ways.
I highly recommend watching this if you're a big yaoi fan if you haven't already. Still on my top 5 favourite yaois.

Classic, and a must-watch for yaoi fans
Though the style has the 'retro' feel of older yaoi, the story is captivating and one of the most involved I have seen. It is easy to like the characters, and there were points where I asked myself, "Wait, how could he do that?! He seemed so nice!" There are twists and turns in the plot, and it's refreshing to see a main character (Rikki) who doesn't automatically fall head over heels in love with someone. Though the OVA is not explicit, it is quite dark, and definitely not for those who don't enjoy a bittersweet ending.
The relationship between Rikki and Iason is touching in a non-conventional way, and it's wonderful to see characters that are not perfect by any definition, yet they still find love.
Really, really great OVA. One I can watch over and over without being bored, and one I highly recommend.

Beautiful, Classic and a MUST watch.
This anime is absolutely wonderful and truly one of the best I have ever seen. The storyline, characters and setting were all perfect. The voice acting is VERY good, the animation was done beautifully and the relationship between the characters Riki and Iason was sexy and also very touching. I reccomend this anime to any fan girl/boy. And ask you all to watch out for the remake! It looks amazing!
5/5!

Sexy and classic
This is a necessity for all people who call themselves lovers of yaoi. Though short, it is arguably one of the more unusual and moving yaoi videos I have had the pleasure of viewing. The art is similar to early yaoi, but in my opinion much better. The men are beautiful, and the voice acting is tip-top. I have not read the manga, but I still enjoyed the anime. I hadn't actually seen the 1992 version until I heard that a remake was being done. A truly wonderful OVA!

Classic Yaoi
This anime is great. not as good as the novel, but still stands in a class of its own. Iason's obsession with Riki, a low-class mongrel, is astounding, to many other characters of the story and to most viewers. I consider this one of the classics, simply because it basically opened the doors for a lot of today's yaoi. Not only does it contain BL, it also has one of the deepest and steadiest plotlines you'll find. If you're looking to get into the wonderful world of yaoi (and boy, is it wonderful!) i highly, highly recommend Ai no Kusabi. You WILL NOT regret it!

Missing key
Based completely from the novel, the art and story were piquant and refined, but, many scenes and character drives were not completely functional within the OVA itself.
breakdown:
story 2/2*
sympathy 0/2* (connecting to viewers)
x-factor 1/1* (art)

Personal Favorite
I have to be honest. At first, I didn't think I would like "Ai no Kusabi" because of how old it was, and the fact that it is set in a futuristic theme. However, I am glad I gave it a chance. I have watched it a few different times when I have been bored, or needed a healthy distraction. It has become a personal favorite of mine, and I've recommended it to all my friends who have yet to watch it. I don't know if they actually took my advice and watched it or not, but I hope that they did. And if they didn't, then they are missing out on an unexpected treat. I'm still not willing to add Science Fiction or Futuristic based anime and manga to my list of favorite genre, but "Ai no Kusabi" will always remain a favorite for me now. No matter how many more favorites I gain, I hope that this one will remain forever in the top five.

One of the best I've seen
I've been meaning to watch it for so long. Years. It has always attracted me and I've heard only good things about it, but I didn't have the time. And now I finally watched it. And I have no words. Except maybe that I should have done it a long time ago. *sighs* It's a beautiful anime, though sad... it has a good plot, good character development, hot scenes, and it's very realistic. I was touched, I had to force my tears back. Amazing, even though it was a bit short I loved everything about it. ^^
I definitely recommend it. It's worth watching.

A YAOI Title Worth The Watch
I've read the books along with watching the anime OVAs. They differ and vary in many aspects, but one thing is certain: Ai no Kusabi is one of the best yaoi-titles in the business. It's no wonder it's survived in the YAOI community for so long. The story is intriguing, and seeks out the relationship between a Blondie elite and a mongrel from the slums. This story conveys that two worlds, no matter how different, can co-exist with each other. Riki is a fiery young man who has caught the attention of Iason Mink, who perhaps seems cold and distant. He is, but Riki succeeds in riling the Blondie in every way possible. The only thing I wished would have happened was sticking to the plot, as Riki and Iason had more than just passionate moments. Iason's mentality was not fully explored, nor was Riki's relationship with his good friend Guy, but either way this was rather interesting to the very end. It's a must-watch.

Best Yaoi I've Ever Seen
one word: Amazing
I mentally slapped myself yesterday because I actually ignore this yaoi so many times. I found out about it last year but I never watched it because it looks old. Ya know?
But you can never judge a book by it's cover.
I mean when I heard that 2 days ago they're remaking a new version of it and I read about it, I thought it was interesting. So I watched the digest episode and the new trailer for it. I was blown away!
So later that day I watched Ai No Kusabi and it was beautiful. Awesome plot, characters, art. And the sex...WOW!! Talk about SEXY!!!
I watched so many yaoi's and I must say, this is the first yaoi that actually has a plot, a good one. And of course at the end, I promise myself I wouldn't cry but I bawled my eyes out. It's a forbidden love story with a twist of jealousy and racism. Unlike other yaoi's, which are full of stupid angst and sparkling lovey dovey kisses and stuff, Ai No Kusabi is realistic. You can somehow relate to the characters and sympathize with them. It's defiantly not a happy ending but it's beautiful. It's a very touching story.
Watch it, if you haven't seen it!!
And I can't wait til Spring 2010, it's worth waiting for. :)
