The Must Have.
While I have never seen this as a "yaoi" or a "shounen-ai", I think it's important to note its because those themes are so natually and well intergrated into the plot that they seem just natural, rather than just a focal point. It's without doubt more of a fantasy (supernatual) and drama.
This is my absolute favorite manga (and anime). While focusing on the anime in comparison to the manga it was compacted into a short amount of time, however they didn't "ruin" anything. I think they had successfully worked the plot into a moving visual motion.
What I love most about it; is the fact that they don't necessarily focus on the sexual aspects of a relationship between the men (and women) rather they have incorporated this in a subtle, but firm way to show that it does have an impact on the personality of a character therefore shaping the way that they are (Hisoka as the prime example). They cover more into the deeper plot with rich diversity with the story and cultural influences which in all makes the anime (and manga) so wonderful.
There is no character left unsaid when it comes to the fact of development for it such ways, even the "minor" characters who only brief and appearance (eg. "The Devils Trill") have such appeal and richness about them.
I love it, it's hard not to. I even know many who hate yaoi & anime who really do like this show.
If you love plot over smut, and a fantastical one at that, this is certainly for you. Check it out.

This was a great anime! It's been about 3 or so years since I last watched it, but it has always been one of my favs! The characters and their personalities fit really well and the way they interact is so fun to watch. I must re-watch this again! i would definately recommend this to anybody who wants a good Shounen-Ai story. It is a Must See of the yaoi world! ^^

I loved this anime. Though things could be explained more fully, this anime leaves you satisfied while still wanting more. I keep watching it, so that must mean a lot! There are definite yaoi moments in here.

I really enjoyed this anime.
The main character was so adorable and you can relate to him.
It was creepy and gory which I love in a yaoi, though there was no sex (just suggestive scene).
It's also rather confusing at points especially as to why the scientist wants Tsuzuki so bad.
I figured it out after watching it over again (I still enjoyed it).
If you like cute, funny, gory, abusive (sorta) yaoi...
Yeah, you'll like this.

This show had a very strong mood to it, which made the series seem even more cool! Not only are all the characters and artwork gorgeous but the storyline is intriguing, it helps if you are familiar with the manga though. Yami no Matsuei is a 13 episode series with 3 arcs that sum up what happens in the manga, as such it can get a little confusing as it jumps from one saga to the other. It introduces and drops characters along the way but there are 3 constants, being Tsuzuki, Hisoka and Muraki.
I really did enjoy this anime But just to warn you there is NO BL content! But its still rather AMAZING!

With less teenage angst and more supernatural action drama, Yami no Matsuei feels a bit like a fresh breeze compared to some of the other BL shows out there. Not that angst is bad, but you can get somewhat bored with the idea of two guys in high school fighting to understand their budding feelings for each other after awhile.
This show is all about the plot. Centred on the mystery cases Tsuzuki Asato and his partner Hisoka Kurosaki are being sent to investigate it’s more or less conventional, but still a strong story that draws you in, as well as having a good sense of pace (compared to Mirage of Blaze for example) keeping you interested.
The main character Tsuzuki Asato is someone you immediately like (he’s just so adorable with that sweet tooth of his). And there’s also the mysterious doctor Muraki Kazutaka, adding sexual innuendos to the picture. Actually there’s not much BL here, except for these suggestive “innuendosâ€, but even so the animation and art are all nicely done (with a bit of eye candy thrown in as fan service) making Yami no Matsuei really enjoyable to watch. The voice actors are actually doing a great job portraying the main characters, and the music is nice enough. Originality comes in the form of the shows own sense of humour (the whole idea of Meifu as a world where bureaucracy reigns, and Shinigami into the lowest payed creatures in the Judgement Bureau, is quite funny in itself).
So, if you are the type to prefer a good plot above portrayals of angsty relationships, you might want to check this out. Yami no Matsuei gives you just that, with a bit of humour and suggested BL thrown in for kicks.

I thought it was moderately decent. What it lacked in sensual relationships between any of the characters, it made upp for with an intriguing plot line.

H'ok!
This was one of my first Shounen-ai shows that I watched and it's been around maybe a year or more that I've seen it so my opinion might be obscured.
But..
I found this seiries adorable and worth watching till the end!
Yes sometimes it's a bit hard to follow because sometimes it seems the show skips a lot of stuff. I remember once I was watching a very confusing and interesting episode about Hisoka and Tsuzuki on a cruise it was going well and all and then the next episode totally skipped ahead into the story. That seems to happen quite a few times. There are also some stuff that you think will be explained later like that freaky guy without a face but they never go into it. Sometimes it feels like it's more of a bunch of OVAs. Like you're expected to know this stuff from the manga, which is true by the way. The manga goes into it better and all. (There's also some hilarious scenes missing from the manga like Hisoka cross-dressing..)
But it's still a great series there's a steamy scene between Muraki and Hisoka that yaoi fans will love. I know I did! In that sense I'd like to say how much yaoi funs will love Muraki. He's quite delicious but again the anime does not explain how he gains his awesome powers or ability to survive so much. Throughout the anime he flirts with Tsuzuki and messes with Hisoka which only brings the two leading characters together. Although you don't get to see much display of affection between them like yaoi fans are used to in some more recent animes. Their relationship is mostly assumed throughout their adventures but you'll see Hisoka do a few things that will make you say "Oooh so they do like each other" But back to Muraki as much as you grow to love him and await the answers to his character's reason of being you WILL be disappointed with how the show is concluded....if you loved Muraki. But then again it's a perfect way to end him since he was crazy anyway...but seriously HE WAS SO SEXY! I lost all respect for him. He seemed so smart and logical and his reasoning for his obsession with Tsuzuki...just no.
Anyway there's lot's of cuteness and funny elements in the story that you'll forget you were trying to find some hot yaoi action and just follow the story because you're sucked into it. There's some pretty trippy corny music playing in the background when Tsuzuki does his magical thang but you'll learn to get used to it. Oh by the way there are a lot of possible pairings even though they hardly seem to step into the romance in the anime. So even though there isn't enough action there's lots of fanfiction based on the multiple pairings.
I say give it a chance I loved it.

I looked into Yami No Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) as it was recommended by a lot of strangers. There wasn’t much BL in the plotline; though I thought the characters, music, and artwork/scenery acceptable to become a favorite!
I saw within the show was some minor nudity, flirting, and a great deal of blood/limbs. It was those characteristics that will be putting it on my list of shows to recommend to others.
FAULTS: The ending was a surprise to me, so very sudden, it felt like they ended too soon. Though I can’t complain since my imagination of what happened next gets to run wild!
I find such a mistake forgivable since the men in the show were more than adorable as well. Even our bad guy Muraki is one I would consider being a major fan girl for!
I would definitely recommend to those who like Vampires, Demons, Blood, Mad scientists, Murder Mysteries, and Shinigamis!
