Ai no Kusabi [2009]

Any yaoi fan surely knows Ai no Kusabi (released in the 90s) and it's a dream come true when we heard that Ai no Kusabi is gonna get a remake - and in 13 episodes OVA this coming Fall season!

The official Japanese website has launched for a new video anime remake of Rieko Yoshihara's Ai no Kusabi boys-love novels, more than 20 years after their first publication. The anime studio AIC (Ah! My Goddess, Bamboo Blade) already animated the novels into two video volumes in 1992 and 1994, but AIC's new project will be 13 volumes long and will launch next fall. For the new project, AIC director Katsuhito Akiyama (Pumpkin Scissors, Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor) and character designer Naoyuki Onda (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Blassreiter) are reprising the same roles they performed in the 1992-1994 effort. Yoshihara herself is supervising and writing the scripts. Nobuyuki Abe (Haru wo Daiteita) of On-Lead is directing the sound.
The story is set in the future on the planet named Amoi which is controlled by a supercomputer named Jupiter. Among the mostly male human population, the light-haired elite class is allowed to temporarily keep the dark-haired "mongrels" as pets. One elite member, Iason, encounters a mongrel named Riki in the slums and decides to take him in. However, Iason keeps Riki longer than it is socially approved, and rumors abound about their possible relationship.
Shōsetsu June magazine serialized the original novel run from 1986 to 1987, and six volumes have since been written and published. Digital Manga Publishing announced its license for the novels at Yaoi-Con in 2006, and has just released the fourth volume last month.

REGARDING A POSSIBLE RELEASE DATE FOR AI NO KUSABI:
Keep your eyes out for the upcoming “YAOI-CON 2009” in San Francisco October, 30 - November, 01. You WILL have more information after that convention has taken place. @ sorauke: Believe me: It's a loooooong story... lol.  Google it. @HNSC: Oh, you are not picky at all, hon.  Kira just isn’t a good writer. Her characters are immature and one-dimensional, don’t actually develop and every time you think they might it is back to square one. I will never understand why Kira of all people had the nerve to go and sell her ANK fanfiction (because that is all it is). There are so many ANK authors who are that much better than her and who DID in fact create an ANK universe beyond the original novel. Yet they all have the decency to accept their work for what it is (fanfiction) and let interested readers enjoy it for free. In Kira’s stories the original characters such as Iason and Riki are just mere shadows of themselves (my youngest daughter, who is five, acts more mature than Riki does at times in Taming Riki). Plus, if you have to use BDSM, at least UNDERSTAND, what BDSM is all about (I suggest reading some classics in that field). You don't simply beat/whip/paddle the living cr*p out of someone and then – woops! - they get horny. That is not how BDSM works and that is not what it is about. She totally doesn't get the psychological element of BDSM. And as Euni said: ANK was NEVER about BDSM to begin with!!! If anything the shackles that Riki wears in Ai no Kusabi are much more of a symbol of a society that in its nature and essence is held by shackles, a society that is not free. However, Kira took the original story, which was a beautiful and complex one, and just turned it into one big bondage party, making the characters act as bi-polar as herself. I just get frustrated when I see that there are people out there who believe Taming Riki is actually an official part of Ai no Kusabi and that she might have a say in the remake of the OVAs. Are you kidding me?? Of course she does NOT. She just went and sold her mediocre ANK fanfiction for money. I for one don't believe she ever had the permission by Rieko Yoshihara to sell her stuff and there is no logical explanation why the original author would have given it to her in the first place. Besides, even if Rieko Yoshihara HAD given her permission, she would have asked for royalties at the least. Anyone who is new to Ai no Kusabi should stick with the original novel by Rieko Yoshihara, the CD Drama "Dark Erogenous", the original OVAs and the upcoming new OVAs. Rieko Yoshihara has been involved in ALL of these works so those will give you the REAL Ai no Kusabi. If anyone wonders why I get so worked up about this: I actually AM a writer and no, I am not a fanfiction writer, I make a living as a writer in my native language (which isn’t English). So every time I see the work of a fellow writer such as Rieko Yoshihara being violated and stomped upon like that it just drives me up the wall. If you take the work of another writer, change it, take it somewhere else, put your own name on top of it and then sell it as your own… it is called PLAGIARISM. And nothing that Kira Takenouchi might have to say on the matter is ever going to change that. Period. I have taken people to court for that and just wish Rieko Yoshihara would do the same. What a good thing Wikipedia is less than impressed with good ol’ Kira. They deleted the pathetic attempt to add her to Wikipedia for the 2nd time in a row because the article about her claimed that Kira was a “notable artist” and Wiki decided that there was “no proof” for that, lol!!! I also talked to some of the folks responsible at Wiki and the strongly suspect it was her who tried to get the Wiki article up there in the first place – which makes sense because this latest attempt coincdies with her return from her last bi-polar “I found God and Yaoi is evil” period. I agree 100 % with what you said. This situation has been ticking me off for years. As a writer I would be absolutely livid if someone not only made money out of my work, but turned it into such a travesty. Regarding the original drama CD: There is a wonderful visualisation of the original drama CD here on Aarin. The "Hitsuzen no Drama Subbing Group" subbed it (in ENGLISH!) a few years ago and added visuals from the old OVAs, so it is now a 400 MB avi video. I must say the idea is simple, yet brilliant, almost like having a movie version of the drama CD. The translation was made by Croik, whose translation transcript of the drama CD can be found on Lena's page at ainokusabi.net, as was already mentioend by HNCS. If you have never checked that one out, this is one you don't want to miss: http://aarinfantasy.com/forum/...post785716 Sadly enough nobody ever did that for the new drama CD (at least not that I know of). You are right, I just had a look and not only does the link I gave you seem to be broken, but there is no other working link for the Dark Erogenous Drama CD Visualization on Aarin at the moment. I also couldn't find a working one on Megaupload. The only ones I found were torrent files, and I am pretty sure there won't be too many people seeding those anymore, so it would take you forever to download. HOWEVER... I just took the time to upload it to Megaupload! So everyone who hasn't had the chance to see the visualized video version of the original drama CD with English subs, I hope you enjoy this (all thanks to the Hitsuzen no Drama Subbing Group). They released a SECOND promo video on the official website! You can watch it on ainokusabi.jp (go to the "Special" section and clikc on the video that says "PV"). Some new footage (Iason and the council, Riki chained to the bed etc.). I also managed to grab it from the official site and just uploaded it to Megaupload. So if you want to safe it to your computers and watch the full-screen version, go ahead. The video is a flv.-format and you can watch it with VLC-player, for example.
