Based on a popular web-released manga series by Hidekazu Himaruya, this has been described as a "cynical gag" story set in Europe in the years between WW1 and WW2 (1915-1939), using exaggerated caricatures of the different nationalities as portrayed by a gaggle of bishōnen boys. For example, the Italia Veneziano character is into pasta and women. The Deutsche (German) bishi loves potatoes and sausages, and Nippon is an otaku boy. Installments of the manga have jumped back and forth in setting from the ancient times to modern-day geopolitics. The manga's title comes the Japanese words for "useless" (hetare) and Italy (Italia).

Pastaaaaa~
The thing you absolutely must remember is that the show pokes fun at ALL countries, and is not meant to be taken seriously.
That said, I love that about Hetalia. The stereotypes are all over the top and sort of thrown in your face so that it's impossible to miss them. North Italy's love of pasta, Germany's uniform and tendency to be super-serious, Japan's extreme modesty, and America's general obnoxiousness and obsession with hamburgers--all of them are hilarious and can make history class a little more fun.
The plot mostly follows the Axis Powers during WWII, but it covers many actual events in history. It also includes flashbacks from when the countries were younger, so you get a lighter take on how things came to be. I love the drawing style, and the episodes are extremely short, so you can watch the whole lot in less than a day (personally, I did just this because I couldn't get enough).
Again, this isn't going to be an anime that you need to search for a deeper meaning, so if you're looking for something fun and cute with slashy undertones, give this one a go and see if you don't laugh.

Fun
I think Hetalia is a wonderful show for everyone to enjoy. It is funny and smart and it gives you a bit of a history lesson as you watch. People can definitely relate to the wonderful characteristics of each of these zany and hilarious characters. I discovered this anime when I was just browsing FUNimation’s website for a new anime to watch. I can probably watch 15 of the episodes in about a half an hour, more or less depending on what I’m doing. It is a lot shorter, only 5 minutes so anyone can take there time and just keep going on and on.
The episodes themselves are just fun. Half the time they don’t have a plot and that’s what makes it fun. The no pointless of each one is just funny. And it is pretty educational with the information it gives. I even looked up some of it and it’s true.
N
ow the characters are even better. They each have their own fun little personality and I think we all can relate to them. The purely insane humour and relationships between the characters if funny as well. And the best part there is even some obvious slash in it that is just wonderful to have in there. You must have a little bit of something wrong with you if you can’t see it.
So overall what I am trying to say in this review is that Hetalia is a wonderful show for everyone and I highly recommend this to everyone who just want to have a short simple show for just a laugh and to enjoy.

HETALIA ftw~
I have recently discovered this anime and I can quite honestly say; that it is one of the funniest series Ive ever had the pleasure of watching.
This story centers around the embodiment of each countries. Primarily around the relationship between N.Italy and Germany (and sometimes Japan). It is also set in the time period of World War I.
The artwork is wonderfully done, and has slash undertones, that you would have to be completely daft to miss.
The only complaints that come to my mind is, their extreme misuse of characters, to those of you who have read the online comic you'll know first hand that they have created an array of such wonderful characters that they rarely use in the anime. Also the 5 minute run time of each ep can be a bit dissipointing.
But overall I have to say that this is a very enjoyable series! If you are in need of a fun (yet pointless anime) then you've hit the jackpot.

Hetalia: Axis Powers
One of the best kid anime series that I have watched. This anime, Hetalia: Axis Powers, is very humorous, random, and dramatic. I love each of the characters, and I find myself laughing and thinking, "what the heck happened?"
Just a short summary: The anime features the characters that represent each of their country and/or nation. The setting is around World War 2, and the time line goes far back as the Great Roman Empire times. It's a fun series to watch, and I would say it's better than your average history classes being taught by some of your best or worse teachers. Don't take the racism part so hard since this anime is meant to be fun and enjoyable to watch.
I only rate 4 stars since the anime is still incomplete. So why rate it early? Plus, the series is based on comic strips, which is incomplete.
The artwork is very unique. The choice of colors are great and it's not so irritating and bright for the viewer to watch on the television screen or computer. For the most part, the characters are such a distraction that the background is hardly focused. Each episode is nicely made with humor.
The voice acting is decent and great, giving the character their personality and character.
All in all, this anime is great to watch if you have a bad day, in a bad mood, or just wanting to watch to entertain yourself with.
Little side note: for a kids' anime, it has it's light shounen-ai moments.

This anime is perhaps one of the funniest I've ever seen.
The Anime is literally translated to: Axis Powers, Useless Italy. (Hetare=Useless, Italia=Italy)
Based in WW2, mostly, it focuses on the Axis Powers, namely: Germany, Japan, and of course the star Italy. They have many adventures trying to conquer the world but with the Allied Forces trying to stop them it makes it kinda hard. Also that and the fact that Italy is pretty much useless... unless you need pasta. Then he's got you covered!
I believe this deserves a high rating because it is just so funny, the episodes are only 5 minutes long and, believe it or not, it actually helps you remember stuff for WW2 in your history class (Believe me I know.)
Enjoy!
P.S. PASTA!!!
