Takaya Ohgi is just a typical high school guy who wants nothing more than to protect his best friend and live a normal life. Enter Nobutsuna Naoe, an older man who informs Takaya that he is in fact the reincarnation of Lord Kagetora. Naoe, himself a possessor, awakens Takaya's abilities to exorcise evil spirits and fight the Fuedal Underworld. While most possessors remember their former lives before being reincarnated, Takaya does not. Naoe is thankful for this, considering his passionate and abusive past with his Lord Kagetora. As Takaya improves his abilities , he also begins to remember what Naoe did because of his love for him. Meanwhile the dark forces of the Hojo and Fuma clans begin their attack as the Fuedal Underworld descends upon the living world.

i loved mirage of blaze however if you're looking for something fast, uncomplicated and yaoi this isnt really for you. mirage of blaze is shonen-ai and the plot is...not extremely complicated per se...but its not anything to laugh at either.

the story is pretty much about a number of people who keep on reincarnating themselves so as to fight a never ending battle with their enemies who which to take over all of japan. the main character is takaya who is the leader of this little sect however he doesnt remember his past lives like the rest of his companions and gets rather angry when they try to foist what he thinks is a false persona and name onto him. despite this he still learns how to use his powers and fights with the sect because he sees the need in it and because he wishes to protect his childhood friend who, it seems, is rather important to the spirit world (a catalyst for world salvation or destruction you could say.)

The love part of the story comes in with takaya's 'vessel' naoe. in their past lives he was the ever faithful servant. at first takaya is suspicious of him but after naoe saves his life a few times he begins to feel more at ease and even starts to like him. however as time passes takaya starts dreaming of his past life and in it there is always a girl. he askes naoe about this and naoe gives him an answer that terrifies him and makes no sense. he says that takaya cannot blame him for what he has done and then he tries to kiss him. takaya gets scared over this and runs out of the room.

it is later found out, after takaya is kidnapped and his soul is bound in a mirror, that naoe, to save takaya's life, put his soul into the body of his female lover. takaya never forgave naoe for this. regardless of such naoe loves takaya to an extreme enough that he was willing to kill them both in order so that he and takaya stay together forever.

all in all mirage of blaze is an exceptional anime. the animation is superb as is the plotline. there is no kissing however and the only real scene you can call yaoi is the one where naoe tries to forcefully kiss takaya. the anime is more centered on exploring the emotions of the two to which they do an excellent job.

there is, by the way, an ova to culminate the series in which there is slightly more action than in the episodes but nothing really comes from it. at the end however takaya says that if naoe can 'beat him' then he will have gained the right to hold the younger man. if you watch the anime i highly suggest you watch the ova. it answers a few of the questions that the episodes leave open.

Mirage of Blaze is based on a 40-novel series written by Kuwabara Mizuna. Although this anime adaptation can barely capture the intricacy and depth of Kuwabara-sensei's highly elaborate plot-line, they do provide an adequate introduction into the world of Japanese feudal warlords and clan battles on the supernatural level, as well as an insight to the turbulent relationship between the two main protagonists, namely Naoe and Takaya, that make up the emotional core of the story.

Due to the fact that the producers attempted to squeeze about eight books worth of material into 13 episodes, the story can be highly confusing to the first-time viewer. The main plot is steeped in Japanese history, the Sengoku period in particular, and Esoteric Buddhism. It is near impossible to summarize the entire plot in this review, however it is a fascinating story of love, betrayal, obsession and war.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable series. Mirage of Blaze relies on the strength of its characters and plot, including the compelling relationship that spanned 400 years. The novels provide a deeper psychological study of Naoe and Takaya however the anime does give a preview of how complicated their relationship has become, together with the love and hate binds both of them together.

Honestly, the description says it all. Splash a little BL into the right anime cliches and off you go. Like Inu-yasha and Bleach? You'll probably enjoy this too; while it offers nothing new, it is fairly well executed and features self-consistent characters. Rating is middling because enjoyment depends on tastes.
