When beautiful Tooru transferred to an all-boys school, he received a warm welcome...but little did he know that his new classmates had nominated him for the academy's "Princess System." The lovely campus "Princesses" must dress as girls (in frilly Gothic Lolita costumes) at school events in order to lighten the stolid masculine atmosphere. Tooru balks at first, but soon comes to realize the advantages of being a "Princess."

Awkwardly Accepting

This anime was very unusual. At first I couldn't really grasp the concept of boys dressing as girls but as the episodes went further and further along I finally realized what the anime was about. Princess Princess is essentially about finding acceptance within yourself and then accepting those around you. Although there were times that I thought "sheesh this is a little corny" there were never any moments left untouched. The presence of all three "himes" were undeniably amazing. this anime is totally worth a watch - especially if you feel out of place and awkward.

Girly Boys Taken to the Extreme!!

This show is about crossdressing. The adorable kind. If you like that sort of thing, you'll probably enjoy watching this. If not, then how can you call yourself a fan of yaoi!? I'm going to attempt to structure this review by breaking it down into categories. You know the drill.

Animation / Art Style:

This is a pretty standard anime as in terms of eye candy. It's not going to wow you with over-the-top action or unique character designs. The setting is an exclusive Japanese all-boys middle school, and while it's not exactly ugly, there's nothing very special about it either.

Many of the backgrounds have the feel of a watercolor painting, which makes the (plain) school grounds somewhat nicer to look at. The characters themselves are sharp and detailed, with expressive faces that chibify well.

One gripe that I have is that the main characters stand out just a little too much. The majority of the students at the school have black or brown hair dark eyes. Tooru, Mikoto, and Shihoudani however, have (respectively) bright blue, pink, and yellow hair...with matching eye-colors. I can understand that the vivid colors help distinguish the important characters from the unimportant ones, maybe it's just the lack of subtlety that bothers me. Some anime can make unusual hair colors work, but in this anime, I sometimes felt that they were just distracting.
Overall though, the art's good.

Sound:

When I think about the music for this show, the one word that comes to mind is "fitting." I didn't like it enough for me to become obsessed with it, as I sometimes tend to do with anime music, but at no point did I think any of it was bad. It just fit in as part of the entire package.

The opening "Kimi to Deatta Kara" by Atsushi Miyazawa is upbeat and playful and the ending "Hohoemi wo Agetai" by team-f is probably one of the closest things you'll get to proper yaoi in this entire show. They both have my personal seal of approval, but I'm rather easy to please when it comes to anime OP/ED's. Whether or not you'll like them is up to you.

The background music is sparse, but pops up here and there to add a little flavour to some scenes. There was one instance I can remember where I really enjoyed the background music. Near the beginning of every episode, Tooru has a bit of a preface that he goes through, similar to Alphonse's explanation of equivalent exchange at the beginning of each episode of Fullmetal Alchemist. Although it only lasts thirty seconds or so, I love the violins playing in the background at this point.

Story:

This show is not porn! Well, I believe it wasn't intended as such. I imagine it would be difficult to derive sexual pleasure from watching this show. No, this show is about three beautiful boys who put on various pretty dresses
for the purpose of being paraded around in front of their classmates. As dirty as that might sound, it's an entirely innocent affair, except maybe for one fanservice-y kiss between two of the Princesses, which is explained away as an excuse to escape an uncomfortable situation. (Yeah, right!)

The episodes are interesting, each one exploring a different aspect of being a Princess. There's not much of a progressing storyline. The first episode covers Tooru's introduction to being a Princess, and the rest of them are mostly different jobs that the Princesses have to complete while the Student Council makes things difficult for them. The series maintains a light, fun mood throughout, except for a couple episodes near the end, which were slightly darker.

Final Thoughts:

There's nothing in particular that stands out about this show. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun watching it. I would recommend this to anyone who was simply interested in crossdressing bishies. It's also nice to watch some yaoi without lots of delicious sex in it. Every once in a while, I mean. ;p

I've rambled on for long enough. Thanks for listening!

Unusual and entertaining

When I watched the first episode all I could think was WTF!? To my suprise it turned into a very entertaining story about the importance of being honest with the ones that are close to you. Oh and of course seeing boys in dresses :) An unusual story that's good for a laugh

Great anime =D

really love this anime. I have seen it many times already and i still laugh at the same things. The only down point in my view is the main problem seems to easily solved and the small amount of "fan servace" is limited to one kiss. But if you are looking for a good laugh, with plenty of pretty boys in dresses, then you can't miss princess princess. xD

Great watch

I really love this anime. I have seen it many times already and i still laugh at the same things. The art is not something new but it is not bad quality ether. Also the music is fairly average but beyond that I just love every other aspect. The humor of three boys dressing up as boys to be a light in the dull male school seems like a simple plot line but the different aspects of each character make every little thing that this group does funny. The only down point in my view is the main problem seems to easily solved and the small amount of "fan servace" is limited to one kiss. But if you are looking for a good laugh with plenty of pretty boys in dresses then you can't miss princess princess.
