Set in Japan during the '20s, Mitsuyaku is the story of two childhood friends from very different walks of life who grow up to become lovers. Our seme is an ambitious type from humble beginnings, working his way towards success. His beloved is the scion of a wealthy family... a beautiful, dark-haired creature with a gentle nature.

Unfortunately, one of the aspects of advancement is marriage. Will the hero have the guts to stay with the love of his life, or will he succumb to the lure of money and power?

Completely Amazing!

This manga is one of my favorites of all time: it has a wonderful plot, exquisite artwork, a wicked sense of humor and Iori and Yuuichi must be two of the most beautiful characters ever drawn. Maruya Kae does an exceptional job here and all I can say is: wow can she draw gorgeous hair. There is even a fantastical twist for those like me who enjoy supernatural yaoi.

The love story between Iori and Yuuichi is touching, sensual and full of angst. Their affair began since they were young boys living very different lives and now as young men they must make some choices regarding their futures. I found their love scenes sweetly erotic without being distasteful.

How I wish there were more stories and drawings like this out there since aesthetically it is one of the most stunning works I’ve read. The emotional plot is nostalgic and has an un-earthly feel to it. I fully and wholeheartedly recommend this manga!

How should I start this review? This is certainly not you're typical yaoi manga. Taking from imaru's review I would say that this manga is more like a novel or short story. The art is simply stunning. I'll stop my comments here because I don't want to spoil anything, but this is definetely a great read...hard yaoi fan or not.

This is one of my favorite manga. The art is gorgeous. The uke, Iori, with his beautiful shinny long black hair wearing a kimono is to die for, and the seme, Yuuichi, is equally attractive.

This supernatural story is both tragic and romantic with a touch of humor as well. The concept of giving up your live for your loved one kinda tickle my fancy. It actually has a pretty good and complex plot for just a one-volume manga, though I wish it was longer. The ending was a little open ended so maybe there'll be a continuation. It has explicit scenes but not vulgar. I found the pie eating part funny.

The side characters - the seme's uncle and the two mothers are pretty interesting also; although I was a little confuse about the relationship between the two older women. Overall, I would recommend this manga to those who love beautiful art and a touching story line
